William Sweeney, an alcoholic, profligate and noted author, dies suddenly. His daughters, who have always worked as a unit but known one another's every fault, are thrust into preparing for his funeral, protecting his literary legacy, and finding the memoir he wrote (and hid) before the publisher wants its advance back. Which is gone. There is not a lot of money, just a shabby old house. Dealing with their grief at his passing, remembering their mother, long dead, and evaluating their own messy lives, they find out there is a fourth Sweeney sister, tangible evidence of his betrayal of their beloved mother. Serena Tucker, who lived next door, of all things. The sisters try to figure out how to be four Sweeney sisters as they face crossroads in all of their individual lives. The ending is very satisfying, although I just wanted to slap Bill. One of my favorites was Serena's father, not Bill, but the one who raised her. Some potential new partners for the original three are also interesting.
