I know this first adaptation of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is incredibly beloved by so many people. And there is a lot to love. The look of the film is whimsical and fun. Most of the child actors did a good job of portraying the brats in the book. Gene Wilder did an interesting interpretation of Willy Wonka. However, this adaptation has never really stood up for me. I've always felt that there is something missing, and part of it might be the darker tone that pervades throughout Roald Dahl's books, beneath all the whimsy. I felt this movie only had a moment like that once, and it is bizarrely out of place with the rest of the film.
