A collection of short stories by many of today's popular authors. Lawrence Block, a best-selling author of thrillers and mysteries, developed the unique concept for this anthology: Have authors across several genres generate short stories inspired by a specific painting by the American painter Edward Hopper. Hoppers works are often focused on the play of light on his subjects, cityscapes and spaces. Some writers chose quite literally created characters from the people depicted in the work assigned. Others chose to reference the painting as a key or passing element of the story or build their stories around a mood. Hoppers' paintings are frequently evocative, but their exact meaning of this evocation can be ambiguous. It's fascinating to see how these talented author interpret these moods. For those who enjoy short stories, I highly recommend this book!
