When good ideas go bad. Well, not bad exactly, but undeveloped. Pride and Prejudice set in modern times, with gender roles, racism, and neo-colonialism substituting for the class barriers in the original -- what could go wrong? But on reflection, two hours is not long enough for the complex story and very many characters of P & P, let alone to develop the modern themes. The Indian music is superb, but the Western songs are much, much less so. And the American actor playing Darcy is so painfully bland and dull -- let's not even talk about him. Make it again, as a four or six hour mini-series. That's the solution.
