This is the first of the Kristin Hannah novels I've read to my wife that doesn't require some historical background, but like all of her novels, involves a mystery. My wife likes mysteries (Agatha Christie, Tony Hillerman) and I like Hannah's frequent historical allusions. Still, this got me chasing after references concerning feral children, so it still worked as one of our reading project books. Hannah must do extensive research for her books, because nothing jumps off the page as being wrong and most of the issues I've questioned have proven generally accurate. There was one important twist that I thought unlikely, but I'm an old sci-fi fan, so suspending disbelief does not require too much effort.
