review Ms. DiCamillo’s prose can be compared to a broad, deep river. All appears placid and calm on the surface. But there’s a great deal bubbling beneath it. Her main characters in The Tiger Rising have depths, emotions that are either violently suppressed or violently expressed, with dire consequences for both temperaments. Her characters practically vibrate with the intensity of their feelings, so much so that the reader can’t help but be swept up in their drama. The appearance of a tiger, an incongruous element in Florida, United States, is both catalyst and metaphor for the exhilaration and danger that lies at the heart of this simple story.
