An American geologist flies to Antarctica to participate in a project at the United States Research Base. Once there, he teams up with arctic guide Jerry Shepard and his best friend, Cooper. The scientist soon discovers that Shepard also has eight other valuable friends -- a pack of sled dogs he's worked with for years, who have rescued him from a number of tight spots. As the three men explore a frozen mountain region, an unexpected accident coupled with a massive storm front forces them to fly to safety, leaving the dogs behind. Shepard is determined to rescue his canine friends, but he has to wait until the weather will allow him to travel back to the mountain. Now, the dogs must struggle against the elements to survive as they attempt to make their way back home.

This is a much better movie than the synopsis led me to believe. I expected to see tragedy, and disturbing scenes. While there were a few scenes that caused me to look away, it was only momentarily. This movie has great acting, but the true stars are the dogs. I loved the fact that although the dogs were reluctantly left alone by the researchers, the focus of the movie remained on the dog's well-being. The storyline was completely different than I had expected, making for an incredible movie.

Although based on true and tragic events this Disney movie runs with the original story and turns it into a heartwarming story of survival and courage. It is also Paul Walker’s earlier works and he apparently adopted one of the dogs after the movie. Certainly a good family movie and a great movie for dog lovers.

This is a 2006 American adventure drama directed by Frank Marshall.
The 1958 ill-fated Japanese expedition to Antarctica inspired the 1983 hit film "Antarctica", of which this film is a remake.
The film adapts the events of the 1958 incident, moved forward to 1993.
In the 1958 event, fifteen Sakhalin Husky sled dogs were abandoned when the expedition team was unable to return to the base.
When the team returned a year later, two dogs were still alive.
Another seven were still chained up and dead, five were unaccounted for, and one died just outside Showa Station.
Although the adaptation is quite different from the original, this drama turns out to be an engaging adventure for both the dogs and the humans.

Excellent movie for those over the age of 10. Some of the brutal scenes may be a bit too much for very young viewers, but older children will enjoy it along with the grandparents.

Interesting & scenic. Not a cute dog story. Please shelter young kids from cruel reality of humans in the antartic - let'm be babies a bit longer.

Awesome movie! Even better that it's based on real events. It may not necessarily be appropriate for young children but what an ending. Paul Walker was great in the movie.

I gave this movie 2 stars, not because it was a bad movie, but due to the fact that it was awful to watch.

My 5 year old cried so much that we had to fast forward to the end of the movie so that she could see that some of the dogs ended up rescued.

I was appallled that this is based on a true story, and that no one would save a bunch of dogs chained outside in the freezing cold.

Although the real story is even more horrific.

Great movie for the whole family. It's amazing to think that this was a true story, considering what the dogs went through and how "Jerry" saved them. I really recommend it!!

This is a good film. An example of how extradordinary dogs are. You will go through a range of emotions as you see what the dogs have to go through to survive. Antartica vs man and dog. What an adventure!
