This is a great little piece of Canadiana, both in respect to this wonderful Canadian writer and to a piece of Canadian history. This novel takes place in Halifax during the Great War and incorporates the disastrous explosion in Halifax Harbour. It is well written and very interesting from a historical perspective.
Barometer Rising is a novel covering the Halifax explosion in detail, but it is more than that. It is also a bird's eye view of a country which is under pressure to develop and change its identity as it evolves into the future. The post colonial landscape and the blending of old Canadian society and new after the explosion makes this novel a must read.
The author is a master at storytelling so get ready to enjoy if you check this book out of the library.
Nothing but excellent. Read it years ago and just read it again and I'm sure I totally forgot how great the book is.
Talk about a running account of the Halifax explosion and fire. If anyone wants to know anything at all about the fire this book is a great place to start.
Halifax explosion is the event that propels this novel of one woman and her community. recommended read.
Hugh MacLennan has to be one of my favorite Canadian writers. He has a way of making you connect with his characters and feel like you are there. Barometer Rising portrays the effect of the Halifax explosion on the lives of the people there really well.
