Sig Andersson has a choice to make - use the gun or die. An unforgettable, razor-sharp psychological thriller set in the snowy wilderness of the Arctic Circle. Recipient of a Michael L. Printz Honor 2011, shortlisted for the CILIP Carnegie Medal 2010 and longlisted for the GUARDIAN Children's Fiction Prize 2010.

1910. A cabin north of the Arctic Circle. Fifteen-year-old Sig Andersson is alone. Alone, except for the corpse of his father, who died earlier that day after falling through a weak spot on the ice-covered lake. His sister, Anna, and step-mother, Nadya, have gone to the local town for help.

Then comes a knock at the door. It's a man, the flash of a revolver's butt at his hip, and a mean glare in his eyes. Sig has never seen him before but Wolff claims to have unfinished business with his father.

As Sig gradually learns the awful truth about Wolff's connection to his father, his thoughts are drawn to a certain box hidden on a shelf in the storeroom, in which lies his father's prized possession - a revolver.

As the stakes rise and Wolff begins to close in, Sig's choice is pulled into sharp focus. Should he use the gun?

Really solid story about a boy who must unravel his father's death-by-freezing. When an old debt comes due and a man who's been stalking the family for 10 years finds the boy tending his father's corpse, the boy must figure out how to survive the encounter; the man clearly believes the boy (and maybe his older sister) know where their father hid some gold from his days as an assayist for a Yukon gold broker. The boy's one weapon is a Colt revolver hidden in a storeroom, but it turns out he has more resources than that alone.

It is 1910 in a tiny arctic cabin near Giron in Swedish Lapland and 14 year old Sig sits alone in a cabin with the corpse of his father.

His father had fallen through the ice a short time ago and Sig sits waiting for his step-mother and older sister to bring help from the town.

There is a knock at the door and Sig opens it.

Instead of help from the town, a huge bear like man forces his way into the cabin.

His name is Wolff and he claims that Sig’s father owes him a share of a fortune in gold. Wolff is threatening to do something terrible to Sig and his family if he doesn’t get the gold.

Sig has no idea where the gold is but he does know that there is a loaded revolver in the cabin store room.

What is the mystery of the hidden gold and will Sig end up using the revolver to protect himself and his family?
