This is a cute idea, but the text ruined it for me. It was awkward to read aloud, and the attempts at rhymes are inconsistent. You start to expect a rhyme, or a line of text you can almost chant but then the words don't line up or end on an odd note. Younger children (preschool) didn't really understand some concepts of the book, it might work better if they have a few years of wearing underpants under their belts to really get it

My four year old loves dinosaurs and thinks underpants are funny. I did not think the story overall is very good.

SUMMARY: This is the "true" story of how dinosaurs became extinct. Apparently, cave men invented underwear to cover their embarrassment. But the dinosaurs take a liking to the garb and begin stealing them from the cave men. Then the dinos covet the under garments so much, they fight each other to own as many as possible. This ends in the great briefs tug-o-war. In the end, all the dinosaurs are dead and the cave men cheer.

ILLUSTRATIONS: Although these pictures are large, bright and full of dinosaurs, the scenes are very negative. Lots of fighting, ripping of underpants and angry dinosaurs.

THE GOOD: I did not enjoy much of this book except for the overall concept of a series of books about underpants which children of course love.
THE NOT AS GOOD: This is the second book in this series I have read (I started with Monsters Love Underpants) and it did not stand up in quality nor was it high on the fun meter. Monsters Love Underpants was all about the cool underpants and what monsters did with them. This book was about fighting, ripping, and violence. The cover is very deceptive. It makes you think this will be a fun book where dinos enjoy their underpants. Not so. The dinos are never satisfied. Also, the underwear are not a central part of the story, visually, which takes away a lot of the fun. The undies are either being stretched between two dinos or torn apart. The end papers show all sorts of cool undies that do not even feature in the book. Another let down. And, the rhyming is badly done.

If you like the underwear series or dinosaur books, I would give this book a pass. Sadly, there just isn't much to love--not even the underwear.
