I chose this to read while vacationing in Hawaii. As the story progressed, I found myself caring less about the characters and the plot and more curious to know how which elements were based in history. In any case, it revived my interest in the multi-cultural settlement and displacement in Hawaii and California in the 1880s. And it rekindled my interest in diary-keeping.
