I watched this movie last year and it stunk. Now that pot is legal I watched it again yesterday while stoned. Much better.

The stupidest movie you would ever waste time watching....
Only liberals would think that this was a good movie that had biblical meanings.
It's crap, total crap, and nothing but crap....
It has nothing to do with religious Christian beliefs at all. It does have pegan and satanic beliefs.... So unless you're a liberal and a unbeliever in God, don't waste your time....

Well, that was weird and gruesome. I don't see it as Biblical analogy as everyone below was mentioning. But more as Halloween fare, psycho drama. A mother's worst fears all wrapped up into one long nightmare dream like horror sequence that will repeat. Opps spoiler! I could have easily missed this one.

I was not intrigued and I wan't entertained either. Not my cup of tea. Unnecessarily too long.

This very interesting film definitely took Jennifer Lawrence out of her comfort zone as she portrayed something out of this world. The film is heavily based on the bible and religious teachings, as well as the way that we treat our world. The movie made many people uncomfortable, understandably since there were many graphic scenes and disturbing characters, but I personally found it to be an excellent social commentary from the director’s point of view. There were some scenes where things did not seem to flow properly and dialogue seemed to be missing, but I also think that was intentional since the film was made to not only be seen, but experienced and questioned as well. It is definitely one of a kind, and I would rate this movie 3.5/5 stars and recommend it to those looking for something controversial and new. @The_Reviewer of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

This seems pretty clearly to be meant as a Biblical analogy, with the Poet representing God, the Mother as the earth, and the marauding fans of the Poet as God's followers, who love Him but end up doing far more harm than good. The film is more or less divided into two parts, the second an altered and more intense version of the first, presumably referring to the Old and New Testament. The problem is, it just isn't a very good Biblical analogy. The symbolism is frequently way off, the story doesn't hang together, and some of the scenes are too prolonged and monotonous. As the filmmaker is an atheist, it may have been intended more as a Biblical critique than a metaphor; in that context it makes a bit more sense.
Note: contains some very gruesome horror scenes.

I was extremely haunted by this movie.

Place it on par with the darkness of Requiem & mind bending of Donnie Darko.
Just prepare yourselves for a very unnerving experience.

I really wasn't sure what to expect with this one. I love Aronofsky films in general so I figured I would enjoy it. I was a bit sad when my first guess as to what was happening was spot on. But I would watch it again to see what I missed the first time around. You really do need to enjoy films that don't spoon feed you the story line and what's happening.

Is it a Rosemary's Baby remake? Is it a commentary on climate change? Is it a biblical allegory? I'd say absolutely yes to all of the above. What I can't say for sure is if I even liked it. So... 3 stars?

This was by far the best movie I saw in 2018. This is Nocturnal Animals are probably the best two movies I've seen in the last couple of years. The Shape of water would be a close third.

Martin Scorsese on this film:

After I had a chance to see mother!, I was even more disturbed by this rush to judgment, and that's why I wanted to share my thoughts. People seemed to be out for blood, simply because the film couldn't be easily defined or interpreted or reduced to a two-word description. Is it a horror movie, or a dark comedy, or a biblical allegory, or a cautionary fable about moral and environmental devastation? Maybe a little of all of the above, but certainly not just any one of those neat categories.

Is it a picture that has to be explained? What about the experience of watching mother!? It was so tactile, so beautifully staged and acted — the subjective camera and the POV reverse angles, always in motion … the sound design, which comes at the viewer from around corners and leads you deeper and deeper into the nightmare … the unfolding of the story, which very gradually becomes more and more upsetting as the film goes forward. The horror, the dark comedy, the biblical elements, the cautionary fable — they're all there, but they're elements in the total experience, which engulfs the characters and the viewers along with them. Only a true, passionate filmmaker could have made this picture, which I'm still experiencing weeks after I saw it.
