Seeing O'Niell smoking and with a flat top is rather disconcerting.

Super nerdy, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Easy to see where they got a few series out of this.

All the negative opinion points may have some basis, but if this movie grabs you, it holds tight. It is one of my favorites. I will have seen it at least 5 times when my "hold" is fulfilled. I never watched any more than 1/2 of a TV episode. They cheaply exploited the movie premise and effects to make TV money. That show is nasty compared to this movie.

Movie stood the test of time despite limited budget.
Interesting that the film creators resented the tv creators in Stargate tv commentary or cast a lot of minorities to play the slaves.

A bargain bin assortment of special effects and tacky faux Egyptian flourishes don’t add up to much in Roland Emmerich’s flatline sci-fi “epic” despite its overbearing orchestral score and rousing pans of cheering aliens (many of whom were actually mannequins due to budgetary woes). His cast mouth their lines while trying not to look embarrassed and his plot, though painstakingly laid out as if aimed at an audience of imbeciles, is still clumsy and paper-thin. Ponderous and nowhere near as clever as its television spin-off, it all boils down to the usual shootouts and derring-do played out amongst southern California’s sand dunes which at least afford a bit of pretty scenery.

I thought it was a real goof.

Spader too chippy, Russell too stiff. And the story too full of itself. Could not get into this at all.

Stargate remains a lot of fun and thrilling, and much better then you might expect, given that the same production team later went onto such forgettable dreck like Godzilla, 2012, and 10 000 BC. Russell and Spader work well together as the two leads; their characters are well fleshed out and a good contrast to each other. And Davidson is an ideally malevolent villain.

This is a better movie than people give it credit for. Kurt Russel turns in a solid performance. There is a very human moment in the beginning where Kurt is considering killing himself. You can see this sorrowful, haunted look in his eyes when he's sitting on his dead son's bed that is several notches of drama above what the rest of this story is about. Kurt Russel is fantastic.

"YEAH! Except it doesn't WORK LIKE THAT, See! You see - WE turn it on from THIS side --- or we don't GET home!....UNDERSTAND!?"
