A heroic fantasy by an award-winning author about a young woman who is trained in the art of the sinister hand of magic, but at what price?

Isobel, upon her sixteenth birthday, makes the choice to work for the devil in his territory west of the Mississippi. But this is not the devil you know. This is a being who deals fairly with immense--but not unlimited--power, who offers opportunities to people who want to make a deal, and they always get what they deserve. But his land is a wild west that needs a human touch, and that's where Izzy comes in. Inadvertently trained by him to see the clues in and manipulations of human desire, Izzy is raised to be his left hand and travel circuit through the territory. As we all know, where there is magic there is chaos...and death.

This story is set in the early years of American settlement of the west, but not in our world. In this old west, magic works and supernatural creatures may be encountered. A being nicknamed "the Devil" rules loosely over the partially settled region west of the Mississippi River, and in his realm he enforces neither kindness nor fairness, but order. But he can't be everywhere at once, so he lends some of his supernatural abilities to agents, and this time he's selected a young woman named Isobel to be his Hand: his investigator, his enforcer, his arbitrator. As astute as the girl may be, though, she has never been a traveler. And so the Devil pairs her with a wanderer named Gabriel, and the duo sally forth to explore this intriguing world, settle disputes, and combat evil creatures. This is the first of 3 novels about these characters, and while they have plots, the stories move along languidly and without much action. The real appeal of the novels is the characters and the world-building, and I enjoyed all three.

A fun read in the paranormal-Western-historical-fantasy genre. Is that a thing? It is now!

I really like the world that Gilman has built, and I love the character of Isobel - it's great to see a coming of age story like this with a female protagonist. I do think the climax and denouement were abrupt and a little unformed, but it's promising as the start of a series.

This is a fantasy-western with an incredibly interesting and unique setting. I can't wait to continue on with the series. This installment raises many questions that I hope will be answered.

An alternate-history western with magic. Very well done.
