I watch her drink in the sight, sensing the flood of memories she's unleashed and wanting nothing more than to let her know I'm here. But instead I stay where I am and stare up at the moon as well. And for the briefest instant, it almost feels like we're together again.”
“You have no idea how much the last few days have meant to me," I began. "Meeting you has been the best thing that's ever happened to me." I hesitated, know that if I stopped now, I'd never be able to say it to anyone. "I love you," I whispered. "Did you ever imagine something like this?" she wondered aloud. "You and me , I mean?" "No," I said. "It scares me a little." My stomach flipped, and all at once, I was sure she didnt feel the same way. "You dont have to say it back to me," I began. "That's not why I said it--" "I know," she interrupted. "You don't understand. I wasnt scared because you told me. I got scared because I wanted to say it, too: I love you, John.”
“We’d met at a carefree time, a moment full of promise, in its place now were the harsh lessons of the real world.”
“But...as bad as it was, I learned something about myself. That I could go through something like that and survive. I mean, I know it could have been worse--a lot worse-- but for me, it was all I could have handled at the time. And I learned from it.”
“I love you, Savannah, and I always will," I breathed. "You're the best thing that's ever happened to me. You were my best friend and my lover, and I dont regret a single moment of it. You made me feel alive again, and most of all, you gave me my father. I'll never forget you for that. You're always going to be the very best part of me. I'm sorry it has to be this way, but I have to leave, and you have to see your husband." As I spoke, I could feel her shaking with sobs, and I continued to hold her for a long time afterward. When we finally seperated, I knew that it would be the last time I ever held her. I backed away, my eyes holding Savannah's. "I love you, too, John," she said. "Good-bye." I raised a hand.”
“I'm going to marry you one day, you know." "Is that a promise?" "If you want it to be.”
“And for the briefest instant, it almost feels like we're together again.”
“I fell in love with her when we were together, then fell deeper in love with her in the years we were apart.”
“The saddest people I've ever met in life are the ones who don't care deeply about anything at all. Passion and satisfaction go hand in hand, and without them, any happiness is only temporary, because there's nothing to make it last.”

Add a CommentI get emotional reading it. Nicholas Sparks put words together seemingly that will make you feel in love and heart broken. What a roller coaster ride. I always find myself crying on chapters that involves John and his father.
Have you ever fallen in love with a book, only to have it disappoint you because it raised your expectations too high? That is exactly what happened here, for me. Reading this book was a heartache and a half, but would I recommend it? Obviously yes. I think Nicholas Sparks has an interesting take on love. Some would say it's cliche, others find it unattainable, but I just think he knows there aren't limits and works with that. The love between John and Savannah is arguably one of the strongest there can be in literature, shown through all virtues and their actions.

Wow what a writer love all of his books
Wow… Is all I have to say about the book Dear John by Nicolas Sparks. It is so touching but so realistic and unbelievable at the same time. It only took 2 weeks for John and Savannah to realize they're very passionate love for each other. However John has to go back to the military and doesn’t want to leave Savannah behind. When he leaves the both of them are torn apart but they keep in touch by writing letters to each other. That only works for so long until they both realize that their love is going to have to be put aside for the best. The best part of the whole book is the ending but I cant really say what it is because you will have to read it for yourself. I think this movie is perfect for anyone that is looking for a romantic movie. It also is perfect because it is a tragedy but doesn’t make you cry until you feel depressed. There will be tears but it will not always be sad tears which is even better. I have read this book so many times and each time I watch it I find something new to enjoy. Its one of those movies that everyone can just watch and you will feel like you are actually in the movie and when they read the letters that they wrote to each other you can really feel it inside. Well at least it did for my friends and I. I hope that you guys enjoy this book as much as I did.
I love this book. The ending was unbearable.
This is book is definitely MUCH better than the movie! After reading it, the movie did disappoint by a lot. I recommend this novel but warning: this book is a definite tearjerker!
So sad! I cried and have read it three times now

My favorite author and is book is amazing. I cry everytime you can't go wrong with Nicholas Sparks
Dear John is an emotional book that pulls at your heart strings with it’s heartfelt message and beautiful prose. This novel, much like Nicholas Spark’s other novels, had me turning pages. Unlike his other novels, the main protagonist is different from the other characters because he has thick skin and grew up with a father whose life is devoted into routine and balance. John Tyree is an army built guy with an attitude who never thought he would ever seriously fall in love. Then, of course at the right moment, he meets the tanned-brunette sunshine of his life, Savannah. Who by the way is the kind of girl you would hate to compete with because of her kindness and devotion to being a good humanitarian. It started out as a simple rescue which then turned into two weeks of them laughing, sharing stories over a starry sky and hanging out at the beach. After those two weeks, John knew he found his true love but he had to leave back to the military. This lead to heartfelt letters from Savannah and that is where the story emotional strings start to strum in. What I enjoyed about this book as well as Savannah and John’s relationship, I enjoyed seeing the growing relationship between John and his father. This title is quite fitting because the novel revolves around a heart wrenching letter that begins with two simple words, “Dear John”. I recommend this book to any romance lover as it was a great read.
“When you're struggling with something, look at all the people around you and realize that every single person you see is struggling with something, and to them, it's just as hard as what you're going through.”
