This book of short stories by a young author introduces us to a world filled with menace and magic and ghosts. Fascinatingly enough, this retelling of ghostly folk tales takes place both in a Vietnam full of history and a more modern Houston.

This book is unforgettable.

I didn't know these where ghost stories until I read a few reviews on Goodreads. I figured the stories were just encounters with unexplained phenomena (which, yeah, includes ghost stories). But the notion that these were ghost stories didn't register. Whatever.

If Kupersmith was also relating Vietnamese stories her family told her, that didn't register, either. It felt like she was mimicking a favorite author. As she was a college student when She wrote this, that doesn't seem unusual. When you're learning to write fiction, emulating what you love seems to be a wise tactic.

All this said, this collection never impacted me. I don't believe I'll remember any of these stories in a week, which is a shame. I read in part to learn about other lives and other ways of being. I wanted this book to mean something to me. Maybe that wasn't a fair expectation.

Updated ghost stories that were fun to read, except for "Guests" which was one of the longest stories and a bit boring.

This collection of short stories is set either in Vietnam, or in Houston among Vietnamese immigrants. Many of the stories have a paranormal element to them. Whether they are found in the hotel of the book's title, in a small mountain city, out on the water, in a convent, or along a Vietnamese highway, the ghosts are unique and compelling. Other paranormal characters appear behind a Houston grocery store, or at the window of an apartment building. The element of unreality that pervades this book gives the stories a mesmerizing effect as you get drawn into their reality. These stories are unlike any I've read before and promise more from this author.
