sad to say, I couldn't watch---subtitles waaay too small for these 'older' eyes.

I got this film from another library, and really enjoyed it with my friends. I thought the father was wrong, but that attitude was common during that era. The location shoots were stunning! I have never heard of the Salon area before.

Faced with a multitude of feel-bad movies, it is wonderful to come across a feel-good one. Yes, it is a fairytale. Yes, it is somewhat predictable. Yes, it is just about too good to be true. Yet, at the end, I had tears in my eyes because it all worked out, and I wanted everyone to live happily ever after. Daniel Auteuil is magnificent. I KNEW people like him in Ireland (rural areas).

When I was in college a long time ago, I loved reading the Marcel Pagnol trilogy of Marius, Fanny, and Cesar. But I'm deciding that Pagnol had one plot: girl & boy fall sort-of in love, make love, he leaves, she finds out she's pregnant, then against all odds the boy comes back and they get back together. Predictable. The part that is not ok is the verbal violence and threatened physical violence from the father to the daughters. The story is mostly given to the fathers, the uncle, and the young man, even though there are six daughters, a mother, and an aunt, all of whom are confined to two-dimensional roles. Yes, the acting is good and the scenery spectacular, but the story and characterization are weak.

This film has all the makings of Jane Austen-esque story, but lacks much of the charisma. The male characters are wonderful and eccentric, but the female characters all blend into one another (except the crazy mother). This is their story, the story of the well digger's DAUGHTER. I wanted to love the quaint simplicity of this movie, but the characters didn't move me enough and the story was a bit too disjointed. A decent film overall, but nothing extraordinary.

A fine film. I loved Daniel Auteuil's performance as the proud, poor-but-honest rustic in the south of France.

I enjoyed it. A look at such a different culture from my own, not to mention the era. Sometimes hard to keep up with the subtitles.

Totally loved this five star movie, but I especially enjoyed the wonderful music which so perfectly enhanced the story.

Lovely old-fashioned character driven movie with superb portrayals of likable characters. No blood and guts, over the top cynicism, or depressing exposes of evil people--a refreshing treat for jaded movie lovers! Beautifully filmed and acted.

beautifully filmed, good story of its time. hard to watch the denigration and dismissal of girls. wish my library had the older versions of Marcel Pagnol's films for comparison to the new ones that Daniel Auteuil is re-making.
